Calne in Bloom Competition 2024 Launched


We are hugely excited to announce the Calne in Bloom Garden and Allotment Competition 2024 launches on 29 April.  

This year's competition has a variety of categories for avid gardeners to enter.

Categories - You may enter as many categories as you wish. 

1.    Private Front Garden

2.    Private Back Garden

3.    Best Single Container or Hanging Basket (for those with little to no garden area)

4.    Allotment Plot

5.    Community Space or Community Group Project

6.    Education Based Garden Project (School, Preschool/Nursery)

7.    Business Project (including but not limited to shops, hospitality and business premises)

There is also a Special Award - Wildlife Friendly, environmentally Responsible and Sustainable Garden

- Best in Show to receive the annual Rosemary Coombes Sustainability Cup for a period of one year.

You can also enter our Tree of the Year competition. 

The judges will be marking your entry using a wide criteria, which will include:

Impact of colour and design

Variety and use of plant

Condition, care and sustainability

Originality and perceived effort

Use and tidiness of space 

This year’s launch coincides with the start of the RHS National Gardening Week.  

National Gardening Week | RHS / RHS Gardening

Each year National Gardening Week (NGW) sees thousands of people sharing their love of gardening, hosting events and talking about what they’re growing on social media.

The week also raises awareness of the difference that gardens and gardening can make to the lives of everyone in the UK. It helps to inspire more people, particularly the next generation of gardeners, to experience the joy of growing and creating beautiful green spaces.

So it just feels right to kick start our competition at the very same time that the sun comes out and we can start looking to be busy again in our gardens, ready to anticipate the bright and varied textures of the flowers, plants and shrubs that make our outdoor spaces a pleasure to be in and around.

You have until 31 May to enter. Judges will be visiting the week commencing 10 June. Our annual Awards Evening will be confirmed soon.

Jubilee Scots Pines at Castlefields Park

Continuing our series of posts highlighting important trees of Calne, we now turn our focus to the two rings of Scots Pine trees on the upper mound of Castlefields Park. The inner circle of Scots Pines were planted to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. The planting of these trees is not mentioned as part of the town's celebration, which resulted in an Oak tree planted at The Green. Perhaps this indicates that the planting was a private endeavour. The outer circle of Scots Pines were planted to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. This circle was planted by the Marquis of Lansdowne. A plaque to commemorate these plantings was created and placed by the volunteers of  Castlefields Canal and River Park in October 2012, who took after Castlefields with great care. Calne Town Council - Officer Update Spring 2023

This time we have an update from our CTC Officer, Rob. As part of Rob's responsibilities, he plans and oversees Calne Town Council's open spaces: Rob with Town Mayor Cllr Tony Trotman and members of the Grounds Team at Hillcroft tree and hedge planting. As I write this, the sun is shining and there is a fresh smell of Spring in the air. Plants are waking up from their winter slumber and ever increasing colours are starting to appear.  Here at Calne Town Council, Horticulture is a central part of the maintenance works carried out by the Grounds Team. Over recent years and under the direction of the Amenities, Conservation and Sustainability Manager, there has been a refreshed view of how horticulture can vastly benefit not only the aesthetics of Calne but also the biodiversity within its bounds.  With increased investment in herbaceous perennials, many trees and hedgerows being planted and plans to introduce further planting to target seasonal colour, variety and to provide habi
