Calne Tree of the Year Competition

We know that trees are essential to our health and well-being and can be beautiful and interesting as in the case of the Indian Bean trees (Catalpa Bignonioides Nana) planted in the Centre of Calne to celebrate Twinning.

Do you know of a tree or group of trees in the town that you really like for whatever reason? If so, why not nominate it for the Favourite Tree in Calne competition and chance winning a prize?

It can be growing anywhere – a street, park, or garden but must be visible to the public. It can be old or young, large or small, and to nominate it you don’t need to know the species.

Calne Town Council’s Amenities, Conservation and Sustainability Manager will inspect all nominations and the winner will be decided by the Calne in Bloom Working Group judges.

Whoever nominates the winning tree will receive a tree planted by the council in a park or other appropriate space. The aim is to help people take more notice of their environment with special emphasis on trees.

Reason for Nomination

Historical and cultural value – for instance if the tree is particularly old for its species, or if it was planted to commemorate a person or event.

Wildlife value – not just birds and animals but bats, insects and other plants and fungi depend on trees for their very existence.

‘Townscape’ or visual value – how they contribute to our streets and how that varies with each season.

Just Because!

What will you win?

  • To celebrate the winning tree, Calne Town Council will plant a new tree in a public space.
  • The winning tree will be listed on our Trees of Calne map and receive a tree tag to acknowledge that it is a winning tree and to inform others how wonderful it truly is.
  • The winner will also receive a certificate at the Calne in Bloom Awards Evening.
